For the first Artwork of the Week of the new year 2011, I have chosen a work from deep within our gallery, "SUPERMARKET" by

PARIS PHOTO 2010

Looking back at the work collected here in 2010, this one stands out for its originality and vibrancy. It could be an illustration for a well-known play by Italian playwright Dario Fo titled "No se paga! No se paga!" ("We Won't Pay! We Won't Pay!"). From one of Fo's woman-centered works with feminist themes, this 1974 drama concerns a group of homemakers who organize a boycott of their local supermarket to protest its outrageous prices to make a political statement. Like this photograph, the play is also presented as humour; so much meaning finds its way under our defenses when we are seduced to take a work of art lightly.
